Isosorbide Mononitrate How To TakeTo maintain this drug's protective effect, it is important that you take it exactly as prescribed. Take Isosorbide Mononitrate (Imdur) once a day, when you get up in the morning. It may be taken with or without food. Imdur tablets should not be crushed or chewed. Swallow them with half a glass of liquid. Do not switch to another brand of isosorbide mononitrate without consulting your doctor or pharmacist.
Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. This medicine should be taken first thing in the morning and again 7 hours later, unless otherwise directed by your doctor. If you have questions about when to take your doses, contact your doctor.
Isosorbide Mononitrate Side EffectsIsosorbide Mononitrate side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, inform your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can decide if it is safe for you to continue taking Imdur.
Headache is the most common side effect; usually, aspirin or acetaminophen will relieve the pain. The headaches associated with Imdur usually subside within a short time after treatment with the drug begins. Check with your doctor if your headaches persist or become more intense. Another common side effect is dizziness.

Isosorbide Mononitrate Medical PrecautionsIsosorbide mononitrate may cause severe low blood pressure (possibly marked by dizziness or fainting), especially when you are standing or if you sit up quickly. People taking blood pressure medication or those who have low blood pressure should be cautious when using Imdur.
You should not take Isosorbide mononitrate (Imdur) if you have had a previous allergic reaction to it or to other heart medications containing nitrates or nitrites. Your doctor will probably not prescribe Imdur if you have had a recent heart attack or congestive heart failure. If the doctor decides that this medicine is essential, your heart function and blood pressure will need to be closely monitored to avoid potential side effects.
DO NOT STOP TAKING THIS MEDICATION without first consulting with your doctor. Stopping suddenly may bring on an angina attack. THIS MEDICINE MAY cause dizziness or lightheadedness. This may be especially noticeable after getting up from a lying or sitting position. Drinking alcohol with this medicine will add to this effect. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to this medicine. WHEN YOU BEGIN USING THIS MEDICINE, headaches are likely to occur. Ask your doctor for instructions on ways to reduce this side effect. FOR MEN: DO NOT TAKE VIAGRA (sildenafil) while using this medicine. FOR WOMEN: IF YOU PLAN ON BECOMING PREGNANT, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using this medication during pregnancy. IT IS UNKNOWN IF THIS DRUG IS EXCRETED in breast milk. IF YOU ARE OR WILL BE BREAST-FEEDING while you are using this medicine, check with your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby.
Isosorbide Mononitrate Drug InteractionsIf Isosorbide Mononitrate (Imdur) is taken with certain other prescription medications the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. Extreme low blood pressure with dizziness and fainting upon standing up may occur if Imdur is taken with the impotence drug Viagra or calcium-blocking blood pressure medications such as Cardizem, Calan, and Procardia. Alcohol may interact with Imdur and cause a quick drop in blood pressure, possibly resulting in light-headedness.
Isosorbide Mononitrate Medical NotesIf overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include throbbing headache, confusion, dizziness, perspiring skin, nausea, vomiting, difficulty breathing, slow pulse, and loss of consciousness.
Isosorbide Mononitrate Missed DosagesIf you miss a dose of Isosorbide Mononitrate take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the one you missed and go back to your regular schedule. Do not take 2 doses at the same time.
