DO NOT TAKE Penicillin VK IF YOU HAVE HAD A SEVERE ALLERGIC REACTION to a penicillin antibiotic (such as amoxicillin, ampicillin) or a cephalosporin antibiotic (such as Ceclor, Keflex, Ceftin, Duricef). A severe reaction includes a severe rash, hives, breathing difficulties, or dizziness. If you have a question about whether you are allergic to this medicine, contact your doctor or pharmacist. If your symptoms do not improve within a few days or if they become worse, check with your doctor. IF YOU EXPERIENCE difficulty breathing or tightness of chest, swelling of eyelids, face, or lips, or develop a rash or hives, tell your doctor immediately. Do not take any more of this medicine unless your doctor tells you to do so. FOR WOMEN TAKING BIRTH CONTROL PILLS: this medicine may decrease the effectiveness of your birth control pills. Use an additional form of birth control to prevent pregnancy while you are taking this medicine. Penicillin VK IS EXCRETED IN BREAST MILK. IF YOU ARE OR WILL BE BREAST-FEEDING while you are using this medicine, check with your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby.
Penicillin VK Drug InteractionsIf penicillin VK is taken with certain other medications, the effects of either could be decreased, increased, or altered. It is especially important to consult with your doctor before combining penicillin VK with the following:
Tetracyclines such as Achromycin V and Sumycin
Chloramphenicol (Chloromycetin)
Oral contraceptives
Penicillin VK Medical NotesIf Penicillin VK overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
Penicillin VK Missed DosagesIf you miss a dose of Penicillin VK, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, and you take 2 doses a day, take the one you missed and the next dose 5 to 6 hours later. If you take 3 or more doses a day, take the one you missed and the next dose 2 to 4 hours later, or double the next dose. Then go back to your regular schedule.
Penicillin VK StorageStore Penicillin VK in a tightly closed container. The reconstituted oral solution must be refrigerated; discard any unused solution after 14 days.
