Plavix (generic name: Clopidogrel bisulfate) keeps blood platelets slippery and discourages formation of clots, thereby improving blood flow to your heart, brain, and body. The drug is prescribed to reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, and serious circulation problems in people with hardening of the arteries or unstable angina (dangerous chest pain), and in people who've already suffered a heart attack or stroke.

Plavix UsesPlavix is an antiplatelet agent used to reduce the risk of stroke or heart attack in patients with atherosclerosis. It may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.
Plavix How To TakePlavix can be taken with or without food.
Plavix Side EffectsSide effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can decide if it is safe for you to keep taking Plavix.
More common side effects may include:
Bronchitis, Abdominal pain, back pain, bruising and bleeding under the skin, chest pain, coughing, depression, diarrhea, difficulty breathing, dizziness, fatigue, fluid retention and swelling, flu symptoms, headache, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, indigestion, inflammation of the nasal passages, itching, joint pain, nausea, pain, purple discoloration of skin, urinary tract infection, rash, upper respiratory tract infection
Less common side effects may include:
Anemia, arthritis, cataracts, constipation, anxiety, fainting, fever, gout, heart problems, hernia, increased heart rate, insomnia, irregular heartbeat, joint disease, leg cramps, loss of sensitivity to touch, nosebleed, pinkeye, pneumonia, skin problems, stomach and intestinal bleeding, skin tingling, sinus inflammation, weakness, vomiting
Rare side effects may include:
Allergic reactions including swelling of the face and throat and difficulty breathing, bleeding in the eyes, confusion, wheezing, decreased circulation in the skin, decreased white blood cell counts, excessive menstrual flow, fatal bleeding, hallucinations, kidney problems, liver problems, skin erruptions, stomach ulcers, taste disorders, widespread internal bleeding
Plavix Medical PrecautionsSome medicines or medical conditions may interact with Plavix. ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you are taking medicines such as ibuprofen or naproxen (NSAIDs), warfarin, heparin, phenytoin, tamoxifen, tolbutamide, torsemide, and fluvastatin. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions, allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding. USE OF Plavix IS NOT RECOMMENDED if you have gastrointestinal bleeding or a history of clotting disorders or ulcers. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about taking this medicine.
If you are currently taking aspirin, consult your doctor promptly and ask if you should continue or stop taking aspirin with this medication for your specific condition (e.g., aspirin and clopidogrel may be used in combination after a coronary stent procedure). If you are not currently taking aspirin, consult your doctor before starting aspirin for any medical condition. Check the labels on all your medicines because they may contain pain relievers/fever reducers (NSAIDs such as ibuprofen, naproxen, or aspirin). Ask your pharmacist about the safe use of those products while taking clopidogrel. BEFORE YOU HAVE ANY MEDICAL OR DENTAL TREATMENTS, EMERGENCY CARE, OR SURGERY, tell the doctor or dentist you are taking Plavix. BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINE, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. Keep all doctor and laboratory appointments while you are using this medicine. IF YOU BECOME ILL, including a fever, contact your doctor. AVOID ANY SPORTS that expose you to risk of serious injury. FOR WOMEN: IT IS UNKNOWN IF THIS MEDICINE IS EXCRETED in breast milk. DO NOT BREAST-FEED while taking Plavix.
Plavix Drug InteractionsPlavix increases the clot-fighting effect of aspirin. The two medicines are often taken together, and combined treatment has lasted for up to a year.
If Plavix is taken with certain other medications, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. Ask your doctor before starting any new drug; and be doubly careful before combining Plavix with the following:
Fluvastatin (Lescol)
Aspirin
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as Advil, Aleve, Motrin, and Naprosyn
Phenytoin (Dilantin)
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Tamoxifen (Nolvadex)
Tolbutamide (Orinase)
Torsemide (Demadex)
Plavix Medical NotesAny medication taken in excess can have serious consequences. If you suspect an overdose of Plavix, seek medical attention immediately. Potential symptoms of Plavix overdose may include: Difficulty breathing, exhaustion, stomach or intestinal bleeding, vomiting.
Plavix Missed DosagesIf you miss a dose of Plavix, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the one you missed and go back to your regular schedule. Do not take two doses at the same time.
